*Aanhechtingssporen (holdfast trace-fossil )
Crinoid Holdfast in Waldron Shale
Unidentified crinoid holdfast embedded in Waldron Shale of Clark County, Indiana. Fossil dates to Middle Silurian Period.
Aspidella is the holdfast of a sea pen-like organism, which had a large bulbous holdfast buried in the sediment, with a stalk and frond rising up into the water column. So the organism has some elements (the holdfast) below the bacterial mat, and some (the frond) above the mat.In this configuration, the frond will be subject to water currents. What is though to have happened is that strong currents carrying the sand that will eventually overlay the organisms has hit the frond and basically dragged the whole organism including the holdfast, in the direction of the palaeocurrent. As the holdfast is under the mats, this dragging has uprooted the holdfast and dragged it through the microbially bound mat layer. The parallel lines represent torn-up bits of mat which were attached to the top of the holdfast. Lumpy margins of the ‘mops’ are probably caused by small lumps of sediment trapped next to the holdfast.
D: Sand deposition. E: Preservation. (Tarhan et al. 2010)
This explanation can explain a number of structures seen in Ediacaran rocks.
Abaxial … A term used to describe the lower surface of an organ/organism; more specifically for plants it describes the side away from the axis of the plant (especially denoting the lower surface of a leaf).

Comb jellies derive their name from the groups of cilia that allow them to move through the water column. They are known as far back in time as the Cambrian of
Chengjiang, the Burgess Shale of Canada, and the Wheeler Shale of Utah. Due to the fact that they are wholly soft-bodied, they are rarely seen as fossils, even from those well-known largerstatte, making this example most unusual as it comes from the younger Ordovician deposits of Morocco. Note the smaller second example in the background.
http://www.fossilmall.com/EDCOPE_Enterprises/invertebrates/invert92/Invfossil92.htm
“CREATIONISTS, please note,” says Simon Conway Morris of the University of Cambridge. Beautifully preserved fossils of soft-bodied animals found in China show that the origin of phyla, the broadest category in the classification of animal life, is less mysterious than was thought.
Gaps in the fossil record mean that animal groups sometimes seem to pop up without having obvious ancestors. One example is the comb jellies or ctenophores, soft-bodied animals that live throughout the world’s oceans.
Now, with the discovery of eight fossils, (reported 2006) palaeontologists think its ancestors came from the Ediacaran biota, the planet’s first large complex creatures.
The animal has been named Stromatoveris , for “mattress spring” – it lived attached to the seabed by a stalk. The fossils were found in deposits in Chengjiang in Yunnan province, and are about 515 million years old. This means the animal lived in the midst of the Cambrian explosion …

aff.

term found in popular books on evolutionary systematics for the Cenozoic era, beginning with the Paleocene Epoch when following the K-T (end Cretaceous) mass extinction, mammals underwent a huge evolutionary radiation and thus replaced reptiles as the dominant life on Earth. Paleontologist Björn Kurtén wrote a popular intelligent layperson book with the same title. The Age of Mammals is also the name of a mural by Rudolph Zallinger for the Yale Peabody Museum (link), which follows his earlier and better known The Age of Reptiles. The Age of Mammals has in turn been replaced by the Anthropocene or Age of Man, (Holocene) when humans dominate every conceivable environment and most other life forms (apart from weedy species) are suffering a mass extinction (Yes I know humans are also mammals, so technically speaking this is still the age of mammals, but I tend to think of age of mammals as a period of flourishing biodiversity). Age of Reptiles: term found in popular books on evolutionary systematics for the Permian through to Cretaceous periods (but obviously originating with Victorian discoveries of “antediluvian monsters”), when reptiles(first mammal-like reptiles, then archosaurs and marine reptiles) were the dominant life on Earth. Paleontologist Edwin Colbert wrote a popular intelligent layperson book with the same title. The Age of Reptiles was followed by the Age of Mammals. (MAK).
The Age of Reptiles is also the title of a 110-foot (30 meter) mural painted by Rudolph Zallinger depicting the time from the Devonian to the Cretaceous and featuring dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals (His The Age of Mammals mural is similar and covers the Cenozoic). The fresco sits in the Yale Peabody Museum in New Haven, Connecticut, and was completed in 1947 after three years of work. The Age of Reptiles was at one time the largest painting in the world, and depicts a span of nearly 350 million years in Earth’s history. Painted in the Renaissance fresco secco technique, The Age of Reptiles was an important cultural influence during the 1950s-60s, images of which are often found in earlier books on paleontology, and was also the model for dinosaur toys. Despite its somewhat outdated view of dinosaurs (presenting them as slow, sluggish creatures), The Age of Reptiles is still notable for its historical and artistic merit and as the largest natural history painting in the world. It has been an inspiration to many visitors including both Robert Bakker and Peter Dodson, who credit it with influencing them to become paleontologists. Dodson was nearly moved to tears upon first seeing it as a college senior. (Wikipedia).
Editors note: In my own case, a photo of this mural in a book (I no longer remember which one) when I was still a young child (maybe 10 or so) exerted a huge influence on me, like a revelation, and for the first time gave me a visual appreciation of deep time in terms of succession and transformation of various forms of plant and animal life. To this day, this mural, along with a spindle diagram of vertebrate evolution in G.G. Well’sScience of Life, have been the two central influences that determined the way I think about deep time and the evolution of life on Earth. I think of Palaeos com as in many ways simply an extension, update (in keeping with more recent discoveries) and commentary on this magnificent work.

Aglaspids
A group of arthropods which are of uncertain affinities, but look superficially like horseshoe crabs.
Beckwithia typa
Weeks Formation
Millard County, Utah
Aglaspid – Beckwithia Late Cambrian, Utah, USA
Cambrian aglaspid arthropod. Despite a superficial resemblance, aglaspids are NOT trilobites. This 0.5″ creature is actually related to eurypterids and horseshoe crabs. They are primarily found in the Late Cambrian, but are very rare anywhere they are found.
the Aglaspids remain enigmatic arthropods. Once placed with chelicerates, most workers now consider them incertae sedis, as the early arthropod phylogeny remains a highly confounded arena. The enigmatic group of early arthropods are possibly closely related to trilobites, and possibly link the trilobites with the Chelicerata. Hoxie (2005) has proposed aglaspids as among the key candidates for Protichnites trackmakers. Aglaspid fossils are found in many Cambrian and Ordovician fossil sites throughout the world. These arthropds had eight to twelve pairs of appendages, and a wide range of sizes from an inch long to nearly a foot. It is almost certain that the aglaspids did not live on land, but perhaps came ashore to mate and lay eggs, as horseshoe crabs do today. Or they may have been escaping
predators that by the late Cambrian consisted of some scary creatures such as anomolacaris. Or, perhaps microbial mats along the shoreline provided an abundant and easy food source. Regardless, it was a paramount event for life on earth when thethe first attempts at land colonization were made. Morphologically, aglaspids appear similar to the modern-day pill bug (or rolly polly), except, like some trilobites, often had a prominent cephalon and tail appendage or telson. Their legs, designed for strolling the seafloor, probably would not have enabled
much speed during land locomotion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aglaspidida
http://www.fossilmuseum.net/fossils/aglaspida.htm
The Aglaspida (Aglaspids) are an unranked (incertae sedis) clade of early arthropods that due to their resemblance to horseshoe crabs were once believed to ancestral horseshoe crabs, and were included with the chelicerata. Most recently, aglaspids are held to be distinct group, possibly closely related trilobites, and possibly linking the trilobites with the Chelicerata. Although aglaspid fossils are distributed worldwide, they are relatively uncommon in the fossil record. They are, in fact, one of the largest non-trilobite arthropod groups in the fossil record.
Aglaspids had 8 to 12 pairs of appendages and a prominent telson. These morphological characteristics have caused considerable support for Aglaspids being the maker of Protichnites ichnofossils. Protichnites of the Upper Cambrian Mount Simon Sandstone in Wisconsin have been suggested as the first footprints on land in the fossil record, possibly marking the transition to terrestrial life that took tens of millions years more to complete.

Leptoglaspis schmidti: Ordovician : Fezouata Formation / Mecisri – Zabora Area, Morocco N. Africa
A new aglaspidid arthropod, Chlupacaris dubia gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Pusgillian (lower Ashgill, Upper Ordovician) Upper Tiouririne Formation near Erfoud, southeastern Morocco. Although disarticulated, careful documenting of the tergites allows a reconstruction of the exoskeleton to be made. Although somewhat trilobite-like in appearance, the lack of facial sutures, a well-defined axis with articulating half-rings and a pygidium clearly prove Chlupacaris gen. nov. is not a trilobite. An interesting feature is the presence of a hypostome in this non-trilobite arthropod. In contrast to other aglaspidids usually considered to be carnivorous, a filter-feeding mode of life is proposed for Chlupacaris gen. nov., based on the strongly vaulted cephalon, subvertical orientation of the hypostome and less strongly vaulted trunk. Chlupacaris gen. nov. is probably most closely related to the atypical aglaspidid Tremaglaspis unite from the Tremadoc (Lower Ordovician) of the U.K., but it can also be tentatively linked to the problematic Lower Cambrian arthropods Kodymirus vagans and Kockurus grandis from the Czech Republic. The relevance and validity of previous definitions and of possibly significant characters used for identifying aglaspidids are evaluated, and as a result, a new combination of characters diagnosing Aglaspidida is proposed. Contrary to previous reports, it is suggested that aglaspidids are probably more closely related to trilobites than they are to chelicerates. This notion may be supported by the shared possession of a mineralised cuticle, a possibly similar number of cephalic appendages, and the presence of a hypostome in some forms, although this last character may alternatively be homoplastic.

Afbeeldingen van fossil agnatha
The Agnatha are the jawless fish, and the extant varieties are the last survivors of the world’s first vertebrate animals. Jawless fishes diverged from other fish during the Cambrian some 500 million years ago, and lack scales, paired fins, and jaws. They instead have a circular toothed outgrowth used to latch on to the side of another fish in order to feed on its blood. Agnatha were prominent among primitive fishes of the early Paleozoic. Haikouichthys and Myllokunmingia are notable agnathans from the Chengjiang biota of China.
Another putative agnathid from Chengjiang is Haikouella. The Agnatha larvae are filter feeders, a characteristic that betrays their evolutionary kinship with invertebrate chordates. Many Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian agnathans were heavily armored with bony, spiked plates. The Ostracoderms were the first armored agnathans, ancesctors of the bony fishes and thus to tetrapods, including humans, beings) that are are known from the middle Ordovician. Agnathans never recovered from a decline during the Devonian.

What are Green Algae? Green algae belong to the group Chlorophyta, named for the green pigment (chlorophyll) these protists use to photosynthesize. This is the same green pigment used by plants. Both unicellular and multicellular forms can be found in marine and freshwater environments.
The fossil record of green algae may extend back into the Precambrian, with fossils of freshwater chlorophytes from Australia. Dasycladacean green algae first appear in the Cambrian, while other types of green algae make their first appearances in the fossil record throughout the Phanerozoic.
First known fossil occurrence: Precambrian.
Last known fossil occurrence: Quaternary. This group has living relatives.

AMMONITES // A coiled, chambered fossil shell of a cephalopod mollusc of the extinct subclass Ammonoidea. Traditionally divided into three types, according to suture: goniatites (Devonian to Permian) have simple lobes, ceratites (Triassic) have a saw-toothed pattern, and ammonites proper (Jurassic and Cretaceous) are the most complex, have fractal sutures with rounded lobes and saddles. Ammonoids appear in the Devonian and become very important as fossils from the Carboniferous through to the Cretaceous. There abundance, wide distribution, and short stratigraphic range make them excellent index fossils. (USGS Paleontology glossary)

I. Early Eukaryote Evolution
Fossil evidence suggests that eukaryotes had appeared by ~2700 million years ago, but that they only began diversifying in the Neoproterozoic Era, ~1000 to 542 million years ago (Ma).
Dramatic environmental changes form the backdrop to this diversification, including rising oxygen levels, extreme glaciations, supercontinent breakup and formation, reorganization of the carbon cycle, and, possibly, true polar wander. I am broadly interested in how the evolution of eukaryotes influenced and was influenced by these events.
Note :
Also important is that VSMs represent the earliest body fossil evidence for predators. Some tests even have what appear to be ‘bite marks’—some other organism preying on them? I actually have no idea what these perfectly semi-circular holes are, but have ruled out the possibility that they are test characters or taphonomic artifacts.
If anyone has suggestions or have seem similar features elsewhere, please email me!

2. The paleontology of the middle Neoproterozoic Chuar Group, Grand Canyon: Biotic turnover prior to Sturtian low-latitude glacation |
|
For her master’s thesis, my former graduate student, Robin Nagy, studied the organic-walled microfossils (acritarchs) preserved in shale from Chuar Group. She uncovered an interesting pattern: diverse acritarch assemblages are present in the lower part of the Chuar Group, but disappear in the upper part, replaced by structures we interpret as Sphaerocongregus variabilis, thought to be the remains of bacterial blooms. Also at this level the first vase-shaped microfossils appear. This pattern does not appear to be controlled by changes in water depth or preservational conditions, and we interpret it to reflect biotic turnover ca. 750 Ma.Interestingly, this same pattern of turnover has been noted in global compilations of organic-walled microfossil diversity, and was thought to be associated with the beginning of low-latitude ‘snowball Earth’ glaciations. The fact that we see this drop in the >742 +/- 6 Ma Chuar Group, many millions of years before the Sturtian glaciation(s) (which occured sometime betweem 726 and 660 Ma [Hoffmand and Li, 2009, doi:10.1016/j.palaeo.2009.03.013]) suggests that the turnover had some other cause. In collaboration with Carol Dehler, and Yanan Shen, we propose that widespread eutrophication may have been the trigger. This work was funded by NSF. |

3. Rotting protists |
|
Most of the early fossil record of eukaryotes consists of taxonomically problematic fossils – we know they are eukaryotes but that’s about it. It’s usually assumed these fossils are the cysts of green algae because of the assumed degradation-resistance of this group. Julie Bartley and I have decided to test this idea: are green algal cysts more resistant than structures of other protists? We plan to set up experiments to rot several different protists—red algal vegetative cells, green algal cysts and vegetative cells, protozoan cysts, fungal spores, and oomycete filaments—to compare the relative resistance of these structures. |

ANAPSIDA
Anapsid skull of Caretta caretta (Loggerhead sea turtle), a Testudine

Because the annelids have soft bodies, fossilization is exceedingly rare. The best-preserved and oldest specimens come from Cambrian Lagerstätten such as the Burgess Shale of Canada, and the Middle Cambrian strata of the House Range in Utah. Putative Annelid ichnofossils are known from the Ediacara Hills of Australia and the White Sea Region of Russia. The Annelids are also well represented among the Pennsylvanian-age Mazon Creek fauna of Illinois.

ANTHOZOA = Bloemdieren worden onderverdeeld in de onderklassen:
1. Rugosa.
2. Octocorallia.
3. Scleractinia.

Arthropods
Arthropods are a group of animals united by a suite of features including a segmented body with specialised regions (tagmosis), an open circulatory system featuring with a dorsal heart, and an exoskeleton composed of articulated plates which is moulted as the animal grows (ecdysis). The five major groups which make up the phylum Arthropoda are the extinct trilobites, the hexapods (insects and a few smaller groups), the crustaceans (e.g. crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and many more, including woodlice), the myriapods (millipedes, centipedes, and relatives), and the chelicerates (arachnids and horseshoe crabs).

Fossil Record of Arthropoda
Soft-bodied relatives of the arthropods, as well as trace fossils that were made by some arthropod-like organisms, appear in the Vendian. However, arthropods underwent rapid evolution in the Cambrian Period; Cambrian localities like the world-famous Burgess Shale in British Columbia are rich in unusual athropods, many of which are not obviously related to the traditional classes of living arthropods. Trilobites were a dominant marine group in the early Paleozoic. The earliest arachnids turn up in the Silurian, and move onto land shortly before the insects appeared in the middle Devonian Period, about 385 million years ago; over the next hundred or so million years both groups radiated into several diverse lineages.
The above image is the head and mouthparts of a fossilized larva of the water bug Schistomerus, found silicified in Miocene deposits (about 15 million years old) near Barstow, California. The actual size of the head is about one millimeter. This photograph was taken with UCMP’s own Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope.
- Trilobita (trilobieten),
- Merostomata (zeeschorpioenen en degenkrabben);
- Myriapoda (duizend- en miljoenpoten);
- Ostracoda (ostracoden)
- Crustacea (krabben, kreeften, zeepokken).
